Swedish EV automaker Polestar will continue to evolve its lineup with the debut of the Polestar 3 all-electric SUV this October. The first Polestar was the Polestar 1, a luxurious plug-in-hybrid coupe. That model was followed by the more practical all-electric Polestar 2 liftback sedan. Proving that 3 is more than 2, the Polestar 3 will be an SUV, an acknowledgement that SUVs are currently one of the most dominant vehicle classes.

Few details are currently available about the Polestar 3. The automaker says it will come standard with a dual-motor powertrain at launch — indicative of an all-wheel-drive powertrain — but it remains possible that single-motor front- or rear-wheel-drive variants may be available later. Polestar says the target range for the Polestar 3 is 372 miles, according to the global Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure testing cycle; typically range estimates from the EPA are lower than those. Polestar also says that “over time” the 3 will include autonomous driving technology, as well.

If the Polestar 2 or 3 aren’t quite to your tastes, patience may be a virtue: Polestar says it will launch a new car once a year over the next three years, beginning with the 3. The Polestar 3 will be built in factories in the U.S. and China, and we should know more about it as its debut approaches. Orders are expected to open in October, and the start of production is currently slated for early 2023.
